Shubhanshu Shukla Biography: He is an Indian Air Force test pilot with more than 2,000 flying hours. He was born in Lucknow on October 10, 1985. He trained at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in Russia after being chosen for ISRO’s Gaganyaan mission in 2019. He was selected to fly Axiom Mission 4 to the ISS in 2024, making history as the first Indian astronaut.
After enlisting in the IAF in 2006, he became a test pilot and became proficient on a variety of aircraft, including the Jaguar, MiG-21, and Su-30 MKI. He was chosen for astronaut training in 2019 and went through a rigorous training program at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in Russia.
Shukla was selected in 2024 to pilot Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4) to the International Space Station (ISS), in addition to Gaganyaan. This will represent a significant turning point in India’s space exploration as he becomes the first Indian astronaut to visit the ISS. However, the mission was rescheduled from June 10, 2025, because to significant technical difficulties with SpaceX’s Falcon 9.
