He attended Government Senior Secondary School at Lalton Kalan, Ludhiana, after growing up in the village of Sahnewal. He completed his intermediate education at Phagwara’s Ramgarhia College.

He made his debut in Arjun Hingorani’s Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere (1960).
