Washington Sundar was born on October 5, 1999, in Chennai and will be 26 years old in 2025. Sundar’s father, M. Sundar, is a cricketer who made it to the Tamil Nadu Ranji probables but did not make the final team. His sister, Shailaja Sundar (also known as M. S. Shailaja), is a professional cricketer. He acquired his early schooling at St. Bede’s Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School and earned an undergraduate degree from the Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science in Chennai.

Sundar made his first-class debut for Tamil Nadu during the 2016-17 Ranji Trophy in October 2016. In October 2017, he scored his first first-class century for Tamil Nadu against Tripura during the 2017-18 Ranji season. He was also named for India’s U-19 World Cup team in 2016.
In 2017, Rising Pune Supergiants (since defunct) chose him to replace Ravichandran Ashwin. He made his Twenty20 debut for the Rising Pune Supergiants on April 22, 2017.
In January 2018, he was purchased by the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the 2018 IPL auction. In October 2018, he was picked to the India C squad for the 2018-19 Deodhar Trophy. International career
Sundar was picked to India’s Twenty20 International team for the Sri Lanka series in November 2017. Previously, he was added to India’s One Day International (ODI) team for the same series after Kedar Jadhav sustained a hamstring injury. On December 13, 2017, he made his ODI debut for India against Sri Lanka, taking his first international wicket of Lahiru Thirimanne. He made his T20I debut for India against Sri Lanka on December 24, 2017. At the age of 18 years and 80 days, he became India’s youngest T20I debutant.
Sundar was named to India’s squad for the 2018 Nidahas Trophy, which included matches against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Many lauded him for his economical bowling during the powerplay, which averaged fewer than 6 runs per over. During the series, he took his maiden three-wicket haul, becoming the youngest T20I player to do so. He was selected Player of the Series for his efforts. He then became a regular member of the Indian T2OI team.
Sundar was initially selected for India’s 2020-21 Australia trip just as a net bowler. However, injuries to fellow bowlers and India’s unwillingness to fly in replacements on short notice due to quarantine restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 epidemic resulted in his surprising debut Test cap on 15 January, in the series’ final Test match at The Gabba. His first Test wicket was Steve Smith, and he scored 62 in his maiden Test innings as part of a critical seventh wicket stand of 123 with Shardul Thakur, which saved India from falling behind in the first innings and contributed significantly to India’s ultimate triumph.
