Although he has been playing for Railways in the domestic circuit since 2007, it wasn’t until the 2012–13 season that he truly turned heads. In three Ranji matches that season, he claimed 21 wickets at 19.04, earning him the BCCI title for Best Under-25 player. One of the highlights of his first-class career was taking eight wickets in an innings against the reigning champions, Rajasthan.
In 2014, he replicated his strong IPL performance by taking 15 wickets at 25.06 before displaying a hint of his batting prowess against South Africa A during India A’s tour of Australia. With little opportunities there, he managed to get India A over the finish line in a thrilling chase with 39 off 16 at No. 9. Soon after, he received a call-up to India, where he made his debut in a T20 international and was included in the limited-overs squad for the visit to England. He received his first Test call-up later in the year, for the Australia tour, after routinely taking wickets against visiting teams for India A.
